The 16-year-old teenager, attacked by the racing driver, Pedro Turra, 19, died this Saturday (7) after 16 days in a hospital in the Federal District (DF). The attacker is arrested in Papuda.
The case gained national attention. Initially, it was believed that the fight was motivated by throwing gum at the victim, but the teenager’s lawyer, Albert Halex, has argued in press interviews that the fight was motivated by jealousy involving an ex-girlfriend of the attacker’s friend.
Colégio Vitória Régia, where he studied, reported on social media that the teenager’s brain death had been confirmed, which “leaves a story, marks of affection and memories that will remain alive among us”.
The Águas Claras Scout Group, from the Federal District, regretted the young man’s departure.
“It is with great sadness in our hearts that we announce the death of young Rodrigo, a former member of the Águas Claras Scout Group,” said the scout group.
The aggressor Pedro Turra was arrested in the act after the fight, but was released on bail of R$24,000 and was free to answer the investigation for bodily injury. However, he was arrested again on January 30th.
The new arrest was authorized after the police presented evidence that Turra was involved in other cases of aggression. In one of them, he allegedly used a taser (stun gun) against a 17-year-old teenager to force her to drink alcohol during a party.
This Thursday (5), the president of the Superior Court of Justice (STJ), minister Herman Benjamin, denied habeas corpus filed by Pedro Turra’s defense. As a result, he must remain in preventive detention in the Papuda prison, in Brasília.
The teenager’s death was confirmed by the vice-governor of the DF, Celina Leão, who lamented the young man’s early departure.
“The early departure of a young man hurts not only those who loved him, but the whole of society,” he commented on a social network.
In the request for habeas corpus, Turra’s defense challenged the arrest order at the first instance and stated that the pilot has a fixed residence, did not attempt to escape and cooperated with the investigations.
According to lawyers, Turra was arrested based on videos published on the internet, without contradiction or judicial validation. Furthermore, the defense said that the accused fears for his safety given the media exposure of the case.
