The Association of Secondary School Teachers (ADES) of Montevideo carries out a 24-hour strike this Wednesday, and occupies Liceo No. 3 Dámaso Antonio Larrañaga since morning of Parque Batlle, according to what union leader Javier Iglesias told The Observer.
The measure, defined at the end of April, is part of the “actions of struggle” that the National Federation of Secondary Teachers has (Fenapes) before different events, such as the “million dollar cut” that the State gave to education, according to Iglesias.
Although from Fenapes they know that the government this year will try to improve the budget situation for the educational system, The organization protests that the unions have not yet been called to discuss the funds.
Iglesias remarked that until now they were not invited to discuss the education reformwhose draft was approved by the Central Board of Directors (Codicen) of the National Administration of Public Education (ANEP) at the end of April.
This context worsened after the work of the investigative commission on trade union licenses of Fenapes carried out by Parliament, and which aims to bring teachers and former authorities of secondary education to justice. The union sees the situation as an act of “union persecution” Iglesias noted.
In the next few hours ADES will hold an assembly in Dámaso to define if new measures are taken.
