The strike of the teachers of the 15 public schools of Lo Espejo continues due to administrative failures in the payment of salaries, bonuses, contributions, deficient infrastructure and lack of educational material. Despite the Municipality’s willingness to dialogue, the situation has been dragging on for a year without concrete solutions, which has led teachers to decide to continue with the strike next week.
According to the Lo Espejo Community Secretary, Pablo Ruchichi, although dialogue is important, it is not enough, and the teachers are not working with dignity. “Despite this, we are on the way to contributing to the process, we do not want to take away from ourselves, we want to be part of the solution,” he added.
For his part, the Vice President of the Metropolitan Regional College, Hugo Gerter, stated that the economic situation and workers’ wages are the most important issues to resolve. “There has been a lot of talk, but little practice and solution,” he noted.
The Metropolitan President, Mario Aguilar, called on the Municipality, the Mayor and the Daem to correct the problems claimed by teachers as soon as possible. “The girls and boys of Lo Espejo do not have what they deserve and what corresponds to them, because in many schools there are enormous material deficiencies,” he said.
The strike began on Monday, April 3, and this Wednesday, the teachers held a demonstration in front of the Lo Espejo town hall building and were present at the Municipal Council without receiving a satisfactory response. Therefore, they decided to continue with the stoppage next week.
The situation of the teachers of Lo Espejo is worrisome, since it directly affects the education of the girls and boys of the commune. It is important that the authorities take concrete measures to solve these problems and thus guarantee the right to quality education for all.
