Teacher unions ask for a $400 Christmas bonus: first bonus payment was “chucuto”

A teacher with a postgraduate or master's degree costs 600 Bs per fortnight, says Fetrasined

Lina Maradei, president of the Venezuelan Federation of Teachers Bolívar section, indicated that the first bonus payment corresponding to this year “did not meet the expectations” of the teachers. He stated that this request for a $400 bonus “is not a luxury, but an urgent need” for the educational union.

Teachers and education workers want to overcome the “chucuto payment” of the first bonus payment. Six unions in the state of Miranda, affiliated with 17 federations, signed a communication addressed to Nicolás Maduro to request the allocation of a special Christmas bonus equivalent to $400.

The document was signed at an assembly held in Los Teques, explained Lina Maradei, president of the Venezuelan Federation of Teachers Bolívar section. Other union organizations are expected to join on November 30.

Maradei supported the initiative and assured that the Bolívar state will join the national day to deliver the document. «Bolivar teachers also live this reality. The first payment of the 2025 bonuses did not meet the union’s expectations. “It was a cheap payment, which does not respond to the dignity or commitment that educators maintain with the country.”

He explained that the Christmas bonus received “is pyrrhic” and has been deposited in parts, which impacts purchasing power due to the depreciation of the bolivar. He said that this request is a “desperate cry from the union in the face of eight years of silence without the signing of a collective contract or salary improvements.”

Likewise, he indicated that the requested bonus “is not a luxury, but an urgent need” for the country’s teachers. «We will continue to raise our voices, organize and demand fair conditions. Education deserves respect, and educators deserve to live with dignity.

For more than three years, the Venezuelan minimum wage has remained at 130 bolivars, which is equivalent to less than one dollar at the exchange rate set by the Central Bank of Venezuela (Bs 227.55). The Executive of Nicolás Maduro has promoted a policy of bonuses, which do not affect the calculation of benefits and other payments to workers.
