Taxi drivers carry out second day of protest in the capital of Ecuador

Quito, Mar 22 (Prensa Latina) Taxi drivers from the capital of Ecuador today are carrying out the second consecutive day of protest, awaiting responses to their demands from the municipal authorities.

The demonstration takes place in the historic center, where the drivers of several cooperatives demand compliance with a meeting with the mayor, Santiago Guarderas, scheduled for Thursday this week.

Despite the fact that the appointment is agreed, the taxi drivers insist that they will maintain the actions until the conversation occurs.

Among the demands to the mayor is that the municipality has greater control in the use of mobile applications dedicated to offering people transportation services, which affects the daily work of the union.

Likewise, they ask the authorities to grant permits or safe-conducts to work without the traffic restrictions imposed by the Pico y Placa, which prohibits cars from leaving the streets one day a week, in order to avoid traffic jams.

The day before, the first day of mobilization, the president of the Land Transport Federation of Pichincha, Carlos Brunis, stated that they have already held meetings with the council, but without obtaining the expected results for their demands.

The manager insisted that the municipality must provide answers, taking into account that the Transportation Law approved in August 2021, orders these government bodies to regulate the issue.

While the taxi drivers carry out their marches, Internet users criticize the conditions of the vehicles used by the cooperatives, as well as the services, on social networks.

Altered taximeters, mistreatment of users and vehicles that are dirty or in poor condition, and higher rates than those offered by digital platforms are some of the complaints.
