Cartagena is preparing to navigate into the future: tourists and locals are waiting with anticipation for the mobility pilot plan. This must know!
Cartagena de Indias never ceases to surprise. City of history, sea and that Caribbean charm that everyone wants to feel, now bets on water in a different way.
After years of being one of the most visited tourist destinations in Colombia, The bay and its islands will no longer be just a place for photos and walks. Very soon they could become a new transportation route for those who live and visit the city.
The proposal is clear and ambitious: a pilot plan for taxi boats that will connect the most strategic points of the city from the water. Bocagrande, Bazurto, La Bodeguita, Cerros de Albornoz, Tierra Bomba and Punta Arena will be some of the destinations of this fleet, offering Cartageneros and tourists a fast, safe and, above all, different alternative to move around the city.
Each vessel will have capacity for 40 passengers and the test, scheduled for December 2025, It will serve as a test to evaluate the performance of the system before thinking about its expansion.
Expectations, however, are high: users will be able to cross the bay dodging traffic, enjoy the sea breeze and contemplate the city from a completely new perspective.
Mayor Dumek Turbay announced: “We want to face the water. Cartagena has a sea that we have not taken advantage of as a means of transportation and this project is the opportunity to do it safely, sustainably and efficiently.”

The initiative even has international support, a The Swedish delegation supports the project and introduces electric boats, adding a modern and sustainable approach.
These vessels will play a key role in nautical transportation alternatives in Cartagena, functioning as public taxi boats in synergy with the massive Transcaribe Aquatic system.
What is the plan about?
The taxi boat plan is just one piece of a multimodal mobility project, designed to integrate water and land transportation. The idea is that getting around Cartagena not only faster, but also more convenient and practical, offering new routes and easing the congestion we all know too well.
Details such as rates, schedules and final boarding points are still missing, but the city is preparing to navigate into the future.
The taxi boats will not only be a means of transportation, but an invitation to rediscover Cartagena from the water, to contemplate its streets, walls and islands from another perspective, and to live the bay as part of everyday life.
