Tariff uncertainty will persist until T-MEC renegotiation in 2026: AMDA

Although Mexico dodged tariff tariffs for a period of 90 days, the uncertainty atmosphere will remain in force throughout the present and next year, until the renegotiation of the Mexico Treaty, United States, Canada (T-MEC) is not completed, considered Guillermo Rosales, president of the Mexican Association of Automotive Distributors (AMDA).

“The uncertainty is maintained and it is likely that once the renegotiation towards 2026 can be increased and well, this is a negative factor to be able to glimpse a relevant growth of the industry in general, of the market in particular, internal market of light vehicles,” established the representative of the distributors of car.

At a press conference, the AMDA leader recognized the work of President Claudia Sheinbaum to get President Donald Trump to postpone the application of tariffs for three months, which had threatened would be 30% of tax.

“The 90 days in which the good news is that there is no deterioration, a hardening of tariffs to be paid for Mexican products. The bad news is that this uncertainty environment remains in force,” he said.

Rosales explained that the Mexican automotive market is in a deceleration phase, where the industry estimates that it remains for the remainder of 2025 as a consequence of the deceleration itself shows the Mexican economy.

He argued that while the improvement of the GDP of the second quarter of 2025, slightly above 2% and better of the estimates of analysts, “this is not enough to recover a strong engine of the economy, which is the impulse to the acquisition of vehicles in general terms.”

He insisted that uncertainty will continue to present throughout the year until the renegotiation of the T-MEC and therefore generates an important ballast to a relevant reactivation of the national economy.

The president of the AMDA ruled out that so far, the effects of the tariffs faced by the automotive industry on average of 15%, have generated a serious crisis in the sector.

“The results at the close of the first semester and what we are waiting for for the month of July, are not placing us in a serious crisis situation, a catastrophic fall of the production indicators, export, of domestic sales, but rather approaching a line of stagnation that in itself is not good news, but we are not in a serious crisis situation,” he said.
