Tarek William Saab criticizes the attacks in the Caribbean: "They weren't drugs, they were cans of tuna"

The Attorney General of the Republic, Tarek William Saab, described the attacks as “crimes against humanity” this Wednesday. of US anti-drug forces against boats in the Caribbean Seaalthough apparently, he said, on the boats “what there was were bags of tuna.”

At a press conference on the occasion of the 56th anniversary of Public Ministry, Saab condemned the recent attacks against vessels in international waters, allegedly linked to drug trafficking, and assured that these actions constitute a serious violation of international law.

“I want to highlight as a total rejection by the Public Ministry the attack on 20 boats in international waters against vessels, supposedly transporting illicit drugs and apparently what was there were fish, bags (…) with tuna, with shrimp,” he declared. According to the prosecutor, “it is estimated that 80 people have been serially murdered in attacks in the Caribbean and the Pacific, which have been carried out entirely by practicing crimes against humanity, without any discrimination.”

Saab believed that these operations do not have any legal support: “They have violated international law, the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. The use of lethal force against a civilian ship in international waters is generally prohibited, unless it is in self-defense or authorized by a resolution of the United Nations Security Council. In this case that I have mentioned, none of this has happened.”

The attorney general warned: “We are with what has happened in Venezuela and the Caribbean on the verge of the extinction of public international law and international human rights law.”

He added that these actions “have burned in a bonfire all the law books, all the international human rights treaties, from the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen, a product of the French Revolution, centuries ago, to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights signed on December 10, 1948.”

He asked interactional communication to position itself against it. “Because from here, literally, to any citizen in the world being shot down and murdered for any excuse, I’m not even going to say there is a step, it is already happening and the voice of the planet has to be raised against all of this.”

The attorney general positively evaluated the statements of US President Donald Trump, who has expressed his willingness to dialogue with Nicolás Maduro.

“The president of the United States himself has said, I think about four times already, that he has won direct conversations with President Nicolás Maduro, that is welcome,” he said.
