Tapia, re-elected as president of the AFA in full tension with the Milei Government

The assembly of the Argentine Football Association (AFA) re-elected this Thursday Claudio Tapia as president until October 2028, despite the attempt this week by the General Inspection of Justice (IGJ) to suspend the assembly amid tension with the Government of Javier Milei.

The AFA proclaimed to Wallthe only candidate, by 44 votes in favor, while a new Executive Committee was also appointed with the entry of the president of Boca Juniors, Juan Román Riquelmeas vice president of the national institution.

In addition, it was resolved to change the corporate name of the AFA to province of Buenos Airesexpand the number of possible consecutive presidential terms from four to five and eliminate relegations from the first division of the Argentine Professional Soccer League for this season.

The legal move will allow the AFA leave the spotlight of the IGJ and pass into the hands of the Directorate of Legal Entities, an organ of the province of Buenos Airesgoverned by the Peronist Axel Kicillofwith who Wall maintains a good relationship.

These resolutions will now remain in the hands of the Civil Appeals Chamber of the City of Buenos Aires, where the AFA had appealed the decision of the IGJ, a body dependent on the Ministry of Justice Argentine and who tried to suspend this Thursday’s assembly due, among other things, to the organization’s decision to advance the presidential elections, which were scheduled for October 2025.

This week’s episodes took place amid high tension between the Government of Javier Milei and the AFA regarding the Executive’s desire to allow the entry of Sports Joint Stock Companies (SAD) into Argentine football.

This decision, regulated by decree and supported by the former president of Argentina and political ally of Milei, Mauricio Macri (2015-2019), goes against the AFA statute.

In that crusade against the SAD, the federation consulted with the FIFA and the Conmebol and both organizations supported the independence of the AFA and the inviolability of its statutes, which is why the entity chaired by Tapia warned of possible sanctions for Argentina if the Government persists in its intention.
