Tania Bruguera: “I do not want to dialogue with the regime, nor is there a possible reform of the system”

Havana Cuba. — Although the Cuban artist Tania Bruguera acknowledges that she does not agree with most of the points of the “international call” of solidarity with the demonstrators of July 11 (11J) carried out this Monday by groups and people with leftist ideology —especially of a socialist tendency—, affirms that it will not retract because it would be “ceding that space” to those who wrote it.

In an exclusive interview with CubaNetBruguera assured that he has signed “thousands of letters where I do not subscribe to every word, it was no different with the last one.”

Among the aspects of the letter that he considers unwise is the fact that “the violence towards the 11J protesters by the government” is equated with “any act of self-defense or enthusiasm of the protesters”, who “only had their body to fend”.

The artist also acknowledged that she does not agree with the allusion to the United States “blockade” as one of the causes of the social outbreak of 11J. Bruguera assured that it is an embargo, not a “blockade”, a term used above all by the regime to justify shortcomings, and that both this and the US sanctions have their justifications.

“The blame for what is happening in Cuba does not lie with the blockade or the European Union or the United Nations, it lies with the Cuban government, which is inept, they do not know how to run the country. The crisis in Cuba is their fault (…). The blockade does not exist,” he stated.

Nor does he consider the differentiation between the right and the left correct, because “it seems to me that it reproduces the discriminatory patterns of the government and places the signatories on a higher plane. (…) Cuba has to take over all the people who have fought against the dictatorship, whatever position we have.”

All Cubans, of any ideology, “should unite to free political prisoners” and “that should not be conditioned to a future government project,” he added.

The third fundamental aspect with which he does not agree is with the final statement that they request “an Amnesty Law for people unjustly convicted, as a necessary step that opens the doors to a truly democratic and equal socialism.”

For Bruguera, “this is not the time to talk about specific projects because nowhere has been reached yet” regarding the end of the dictatorship. “Although it seems good to me that the left positions itself against the government, that it unites to defend the rights of Cubans, to say that one thing is better than the other or the only option, it does not seem right to me,” he added.

When asked by the journalist Camila Acosta, about whether she believed in that “democratic socialism” and what it would be, Bruguera said that she believes that “Cuba needs a fair society and a government that cares about the people, that understands that its function is serve the people, not serve the people. (…) What I want is a fair society, I don’t care what it’s called”.

The also activist added that, although she does not agree with all aspects of the statement, she wanted “to be in that group”. At this point, Ella Acosta reminded her that almost everyone in the group was socialist, and then asked her if she believed in socialism.

“I believe in social justice, in equal opportunities, in equity, and I don’t want a country like the one that exists now, governed by four people; and if tomorrow it is that socialist democracy that is in power and continues to do what this regime does, I will be against it again, I will always play the opposition, ”he replied.

Bruguera also stated that he was against the reformism of the Cuban system: “Each generation has given the regime a chance to change, this one has too. We asked for dialogue, for the laws to be changed, and we went through legal channels, we gave them opportunities to retract and remove a minister of culture who is a hitter and repressor of artists, and none of that was achieved. Our generation has given that government every opportunity to do things right. I no longer want dialogue. There is no possible reform at this time.”
