However, one dangerous and prohibited practice still persists: the use of cured thread.

This type of thread can cause severe and even fatal cuts if it gets tangled in the body or if used irresponsibly. Despite warnings, some continue to use this material in their kites, endangering both passersby and other participants.
Chilean legislation is clear and strict regarding the use of cured thread. Individuals caught using or facilitating the use of this type of thread face fines ranging from 2 to 50 Monthly Tax Units (UTM). This equates to penalties ranging from approximately $132,724 to $3,318,100, depending on the value of the UTM in September 2024.
In addition, for those who manufacture, store or market cured threadthe legal consequences are even more severe. Sanctions can include minor prison sentences in their minimum degree and fines ranging from 100 to 500 UTM, which translates into amounts that can reach up to $33,181,000.
The National Traffic Safety Commission and the Ministry of Public Works have intensified awareness campaigns to warn about the dangers of cured thread. In 2024, 38 risk points have been identified for the practice of raising kiteswhere the ban on this dangerous material is emphasized.
