The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Taiwan (MOFA) demanded explanations from the former ambassador to Nicaragua, Jaime Wu, to whom the Daniel Ortega regime handed over citizenship a day after breaking relations with that country to recognize the People’s Republic of China, denounced this Wednesday the newspaper Taipei times.
The Ministry contacted Wu through private channels and asked him to answer questions from the public. A spokesperson for that institution, Joanne Ou, said at a press conference that the former diplomat had requested retirement since September 28 of last year, however, he clarified that the Ministry had not been informed about the decision to receive citizenship.
It is the second pronouncement of the Government of that country on the case of the former diplomat. Discreetly, when the nationalization was known, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Taiwan, Jaushieh Joseph Wu, said that the former Nicaraguan ambassador is “retired from the diplomatic service” and did not want to comment more on his family or his personal life.
The version that he offered to his country
However, the tone of Taiwan now changed. According to the spokesperson’s statements cited by the Taipei Times, the former ambassador had told the Ministry that his wife could not travel long distances due to health problems, so the couple could not return to Taiwan for the time being.
Ou recalled that Wu is still subject to the National Security Classified Information Protection Act. “The ministry is conducting interagency discussions on calls to amend the law to prevent a similar incident,” Ou added.
The former ambassador arrived in the country in 2007, had at least two diplomatic missions – the last from 2017 to last year – in which he highlighted his appreciation for Nicaragua in his speeches. However, his closeness to the presidential family was clear and was questioned by his silence and the financial support given by his country to Ortega, in the midst of the serious human rights crisis caused by state repression.
On December 10, the resolution of the Nicaraguan General Directorate of Migration and Foreigners was published in the Official Gazette, in which the decision to grant citizenship to Wu and his wife was communicated, in which they recognize each other. your contributions through his role as a diplomat in the country, which was signed by Commander Juan Emilio Rivas Benites since last November 26.
More criticism in Taiwan: “It has no ethics”
The newspaper also quotes former Democratic Progressive Party legislator Wang Ting-yu in statements he posted separately on his Facebook yesterday, in which he claims he must have worked for the common good.
However, Wang assures that his actions, including accepting Nicaraguan citizenship and staying in the Central American country after he cut ties with Taiwan, show that he has no professional ethics, which should be condemned by the public.
Wang even suggested that the authorities should discuss whether to freeze Wu’s pension or take legal action, and urged the former ambassador to return to Taiwan and explain his actions.
The severance of relations with Taiwan is Ortega’s latest diplomatic scandal. Taipei denounced the “Illegal appropriation” from its former diplomatic headquarters that the Nicaraguan “dictatorial regime” carried out to hand it over to the People’s Republic of China. A spokesman for that world power considered him a “Act of justice”While some national and international experts, consulted by this newspaper, questioned the actions of the Nicaraguan authorities, a unique case of dispossession in the region.
CONFIDENTIAL He has been requesting an interview with the Taiwanese Foreign Ministry authorities for more than a week, but has received no response so far.
