They made good on their threat. Protesters had set fire to two tollbooths in Tomasiri, belonging to the Covinca company, but withdrew thanks to the timely appearance of the Peruvian Army but threatened to return the next day.
The general manager of Covinca, Edilson Coral Parra, reported yesterday that on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. again a mob of 150 unknown people arrived and threw stones away the only worker cleaning. They finished the few remaining computer equipment and set fire to the rest of the rooms, such as a tollbooth, a warehouse, a bedroom, and the administrative office.
Losses will be 1 million a week
Coral denounced that this situation had already been reported to the Police, the Crime Prevention Prosecutor’s Office, the Ombudsman’s Office and the Ministry of Transportation, in order for them to provide them with protection with a permanent police contingent, however they were not attended to.
He asserted that the damage caused will prevent the collection of tolls in the southern concession in the coming days, so that his losses would amount to 1,000,000 soles a week; which would jeopardize the maintenance of the roads in the departments of Arequipa, Moquegua and Tacna.
