Tabaré Viera asked to accompany the Orsi-Cosse formula, but he was wrong: “No! Cut, cut!”

Tabaré Viera, senator-elect of the PC
Tabaré Viera, senator-elect of the PC

The senator elected by the Colorado Party (and former presidential candidate), Tabare Vierawas in an interview on Monday on the program Más Temprano que Tarde, on 810 AM, in which he spoke about the position that his party has in the context of the multicolor coalition.

Viera began by saying that he has participated in an election “in several stages” and that The period between the first round and the runoff is too short to define the single government programagreed upon by all the coalition parties, despite the fact that the coalition already knew that they were going to extend it with a view to the second round.

Speaking about what the PC did during the internal elections, and later in the first round, Viera reflected: “Months ago the big question was: ‘But what about the Colorado Party doesn’t have candidates? What is going to happen to the PC? ¿He lost profile with the coalition? Well, however, the internal election arrived and at first we were eight pre-candidates, then we were down to six. ANDI believe that it made it possible to reactivate with different options and to want the different pre-candidacies for a party that showed that it had strength, that it had the capacity to convene. In short, beyond the results—which for me were obviously not what I expected, not even close—we chose a candidate who represents renewal, who represents the new way of communicating.”

And he added: “I think the re-entry of Pedro Bordaberry to the field, already in the national election, already in the second half, first because it allowed us under that umbrella, with the new Vamos Uruguay, to make an agreement of three different groups (…) So I think the party positioned itself well, which ultimately grew to numbers that it had not had for a few years.”

Viera on the Frente Amplio: “it is all promises and all joys, it changed its proposals and positioned itself more to the center”

Regarding the process of generational change of the PC, Viera believes that the party today is in “a clear process of recovery with many new people” with the renewal of figures such as Andrés Ojeda, who comes to replace classic forces such as Jorge Batlle or Julio María Sanguinettti (the latter was a pre-candidate in the last election).

“There is an important contribution from new and young figures in all sectors, and I predict that the upcoming election will be the election of the Colorado Party,” he stated as an “election of desire” of which he is “totally convinced.” All this, despite the fact that Ojeda says that his political reference is Luis Lacalle Pou, outgoing president and outstanding figure of the National Party (PN).

About batllismoonce the most progressive force with power within the PC (today somewhat cornered by the hardest and most conservative wings of the right), the senator-elect said: “Batllismo has permeated Uruguayan society and has established itself to the point that today it is they claim even outside the PC. I believe that Batllismo is current with its basic ideas, with the legacy of José Batlle y Ordoñezlater had various expressions throughout history, as with Luis Batlle Berres(the so-called second batllism), with Jorge Batlle It was a different one.”

And he continued: “But Batllismo, philosophically speaking, I think that today there are very few Uruguayans who can say that I am not Batllistas—except a fanatic—. But the idea of as much freedom as possible – because Batllismo is liberal – but as much State as necessary, the presence of the State, in a society that must prioritize freedoms, including economic freedom, with private initiative, but with a State guarantor, stimulator of development… that is Batllismo, the father of great social legislation, and I declare myself absolutely Batllista.”

Zaida González’s support for the FA and the furcio in support of Orsi

About Zaida Gonzálezleader of the PC who now gave his support to Yamandú Orsi, tried to take away the strength of the adhesion because he was not “of the first line”, at the same time he assured that it was “very striking” that the FA came out to attract his support “with “more publicity than is needed.” He rejected, however, that he be expelled from the PC, because the Organic Charter allows him to express his freedom of expression.

At the end of the interview, Viera said goodbye by asking for votes with a view to the runoff, but the subconscious played tricks on him: “I am the grateful one (for the invitation) and thank you very much for the opportunity. And well, we ask you to join us with the vote then on the next 24th for the Orsi formula…”, he was then interrupted by journalist Wilmar Amaral to ask him if he was really asking to vote for the FA candidate. “Cut! Cut! No! “To the Álvaro Delgado – Valeria Ripoll formula, please!”
