In an assessment of her visit last week to Washington, where she met with Donald Trump and the Prime Minister of Canada, Mark Carney, President Claudia Sheinbaum said that it was a “very cordial” meeting.
He considered that the fact that the three countries will organize the Soccer World Cup is a favorable factor that will contribute to the negotiations on the North American trade agreement (T-MEC).
Later he qualified the scope of the meeting that they held for an hour at the Kennedy Center, headquarters of the draw for the football championship: “what was seen was a good relationship between the three countries. That was very important. And it is not that we have made much progress in the private meeting, because the three countries met, but we agreed to continue working. In due course, when we make more progress, we will be able to inform them.”
During the morning, Sheinbaum said that she is convinced that Mexico needs to have a good relationship with the United States, because we are neighbors and more than 40 million Mexicans reside there. However, he emphasized that until now this good relationship has occurred on the basis of respect for national sovereignty in the broadest sense, because only the people of Mexico can decide who governs.
There is also the defense of Mexicans, “because wherever we are we always talk about it with President Trump.” He highlighted that in their first face-to-face contact, “his treatment was very kind,” something he attributed especially to the respect that the Republican has for our country, because at these levels it is not only a personal matter. “At no time was there any rudeness; nothing. It was very, very respectful,” which he appreciated.
He pointed out that the central topic of the meeting was fundamentally economic, and preliminarily on the T-MEC negotiations, since officials from the governments of the United States, Mexico and Canada were appointed to continue working. “It is a good environment for the review of the treaty. Even the atmosphere we experienced there on Friday shows that, indeed, it is a moment where sport unites you.”
When asked if he addressed other issues with Trump, he noted that they were mainly economic issues.
–From this information that one of the sons of El Chapo Guzmán admitted that he kidnapped May Zambada, has Mexico continued demanding data from the United States?
–Now it will be up to the new prosecutor. And no, we are not talking about that topic. We talked about many things, particularly about trade, what has to do with the T-MEC going forward, and there we agreed to continue working.
In this context, he confirmed that he will not attend the opening game of the World Cup to be held at the Azteca stadium, which is why he maintained his position that he will give the ticket to a girl who is interested in soccer. “I’m going to be here with the people watching the game. And if heads of state come, we will receive them the day before and we will have a meeting, if that is the case.”
