Switzerland displaces Haiti from total Dominican exports

Total exports from the Dominican Republic reached US $ 8,768.74 million until September 2021, of which US $ 698.91 million belong to the Haitian market for a 7.97% share.

According to official data, the United States continues to be the main market for Dominican exports with US $ 4,434.60 million for 50.57% of the total. Haiti, which for many years has been mentioned as the second commercial partner of the Dominican Republic, during 2021 was displaced by Switzerland with US $ 830.89 million, for a participation of 9.48% of the total.

Faced with the crisis unleashed in Haiti, the president of the National Council of Private Enterprise (Conep), Pedro Brache, pointed out that the deterioration of the situation raises concern, and calls for the international community to take a decisive interest in the recovery of the neighboring country the path of order and prosperity. He indicated that instability obviously affects trade relations, but now the important thing is that the international community turns to work on a solution for the serious situation that that country is going through. “Haiti is an important trading partner for our country, although, due to the aforementioned situation, its ranking has been declining in importance. It is currently number three, after the US and Switzerland. If we take out the gold, Haiti is still number two, “he explained.

The data from Prodominicana indicate that among the products exported to Haiti are: cotton fabrics, cotton T-shirts and T-shirts, construction cement, wheat or morcajo flour, soybean oil and their fractions; plates, sheets, sheets and strips of non-cellular ethylene and effortless polymers, among others.

Also, sweet cookies, paper or corrugated cardboard boxes, ketchup and other tomato sauces; crockery and other tableware and kitchenware, of plastic; iron or steel bars, among others.

Prodominicana explains that the Dominican Republic exchange with Haiti went from US $ 1,045.55 million in 2015 to US $ 829.79 million in 2019. Exports represent 99.6% of the exchange of the last year, this balance has been favorable for the Dominican Republic in all the years analyzed.

During 2020, total exports from the Dominican Republic reached US $ 9,844.75 million, of which products with a value of US $ 4,795.88 million were exported to the US, for a participation of 48.72%. US $ 1,165.45 million were exported to Switzerland, for 11.84% of the total, to occupy the second export destination.

In the case of Haiti, the neighboring country remains in a distant third place with US $ 751.23 million, for 7.63% of total exports. Haiti is followed by Puerto Rico (5.02%), Canada (4.1%), the Netherlands (4.01%), India (1.98%), China (1.85%) and Germany (1.11%), among others.

In 2019, Haiti was the second destination for exports with US $ 820.69 million (8.14%) below the United States with 50.74% of the US $ 10,079 million that reached total exports in that year. Switzerland had already been giving a sign of surpassing the neighboring country. During 2019, Switzerland exported US $ 783.95 million, for a 7.78% share of the total. It should be noted that in that same year, US $ 767.00 million in gold was exported to Switzerland, including raw platinum gold, for non-monetary use.
