Suyen Barahona: “I haven’t been able to hear my son’s laugh for a year”

Suyen Barahona: "I haven't been able to hear my son's laugh for a year"

The opposition and current political prisoner Suyen Barahona is serving a year of imprisonment in the cells of the Directorate of Judicial Assistance (DAJ), known as “El Nuevo Chipote”, in Managua. Her relatives lament the conditions to which she is being subjected with physical and psychological torture.

Barahona regrets not being able to see her five-year-old son, since the Nicaraguan regime has prohibited any contact with the minor. «I haven’t been able to see my son for a year, without being able to hear his smile, without being able to hug him and be with him. I keep dreaming of leaving him and all the girls and boys a beautiful Nicaragua. My dream, my joy and my commitment remain intact: Justice and freedom », were the words of the opponent that her relatives made known through a message posted on social networks.

His relatives state that “on June 10 we were able to see our sister Suyen (Barahona) for the eighth time in a year. She finds herself strong of spirit despite the conditions she faces. Suyen continues to be isolated and incommunicado, as are her companions Tamara Dávila, Ana Margarita Vijil and Dora María Téllez. She is really incredible that she has been in a cell alone for 365 days, without being able to have a person to interact with and talk to », she denounces.

Those close to the president of the Renovating Democratic Union (Unamos) are concerned, since Barahona “continues to lose weight, with access to sunlight only once a week. Some medical tests have been carried out, but the results of these have not been reported, creating anguish and anxiety both in her and in us her relatives. Since her last visit, more than 45 days ago, she has had skin lesions that appear to be fungal due to the humid conditions in her cell.”

On February 15, Ortega judge Ulisa Yaoska Tapia Silva, head of the Thirteenth Criminal Court of Managua, sentenced Barahona to eight years in prison for the crime of “undermining national integrity,” and also disqualified her from hold public office.

During the political trial, the opponent expressed briefly and firmly that “I have dedicated a large part of my adult life to improving Nicaragua and defending the human rights of all Nicaraguans. Part of my fight has been for my son so that he knows that his rights must be defended ».

In one year in prison, they affirm that “the right of all political prisoners to regular visits continues to be violated, to communicate with their family, sons and daughters, either through visits, correspondence or calls. Despite multiple attempts, Suyen has been deprived of receiving a drawing, a photo or a call from her 5-year-old son for an entire year.

The activist was one of the most representative faces within the opposition denouncing human rights violations by the regime of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo. Although there is already a sentence, the regime does not define whether she will serve the sentence in “El Chipote” or she will be transferred to a women’s prison.
