Suspicion of dengue in the death of another Cuban nurse, in Sancti Spíritus

Dengue continues to wreak havoc among health professionals in Cuba, now with the death of a nurse, Carmen Ana Pérez Duarte, in the province of Sancti Spíritus, who suffered cardiac arrest this week allegedly caused by complications of a contagion transmitted by the aedes aegypti mosquito.

It emerged on social networks that Pérez Duarte worked at the José Martí Pérez Teaching Pediatric Hospital in Sancti Spíritus, but a source from the health institution confirmed to this newspaper that the nurse had moved to the Maternal and Child Hospital.

He assured that the 49-year-old nurse was on vacation in Varadero with her husband, a military professional, and began to feel bad. Taking her to the hospital, she went into cardiac arrest. “Everything went very quickly, she did not suffer from any rare disease,” the source said.

For their part, her colleagues offered their condolences to the family and regretted that she was another victim of the dengue outbreak that is plaguing the Island. Mercedes Valdés Parada, employee of the Pediatric Hospital, he pointed that Pérez Duarte was an “exceptional companion”, while the user Esix Castañeda stated that the virus “seems to have raged on the ladies” or nurses.

He mentioned that, in addition to Pérez Duarte, in the past few days he also died for the same reason. Nelly Sanchez Espinosawho worked as a nurse at the Maternal and Child Hospital in the municipality of Cabaiguán, in Sancti Spíritus.

The nurse is the first victim of dengue reported in October, while in September this disease claimed the lives of two other professionals

The local health directors have not yet offered any information on the death of Pérez Duarte.

The nurse is the first victim of dengue reported in October, while in September this disease claimed the lives of two other health professionals, whose deaths were confirmed on social networks, since the Cuban Government does not offer total figures of infections nor of those who died from this cause.

In September, the physiotherapist Elba Rosa López Nápoles also died, in the province of Santiago de Cuba, whose family She claimed that they did not give her help to take her to an assistance center because it was not registered as a serious contagion. Her second death was that of Nelly Sánchez, in Cabaiguán.

Dengue does not let up and the province of Guantánamo has become the epicenter of infections with more than 2,000 febrile cases treated in health institutions in the last week of September alone. Leonel Heredia, deputy director of the Provincial Center for Hygiene, Epidemiology and Microbiology, confirmed to the official newspaper Venceremos that the municipalities of El Salvador and Baracoa report the highest number of infections.

While the cases continue to rise, the Government affirms that the Island “is in the context of what is happening in the region,” but the Deputy Minister of Public Health, Carilda Peña García, warned in September that Cubans still have to face the “most complex moment of the disease” because the highest peaks in infections usually occur in early November.

At least in the eastern province, according to the epidemiologist Heredia, there is a risk of a rebound in the municipalities of Guantánamo and Caimanera, because there are several localities with declared transmission. In addition, 1,600 deposits have been identified with larvae of the Aedes aegypti mosquito, the transmitting agent of dengue, located in 1,301 homes in nine of the 10 municipalities that make up the province.
