Havana Cuba. — The dengue epidemic that is plaguing Cuba, confirmed by various reports that have appeared in the official and independent press, is beginning to haunt the island’s prisons.
From the Combinado del Este prison of maximum rigor, in Havana, the prisoner Yuri Almenares Gonzalez informed this newspaper about signs of an outbreak of the disease that would be affecting several inmates in that facility.
Almenares González reveals that he learned of this situation while he was in the prison hospital, when he heard some doctors comment that there are positive cases in all the buildings.
According to the inmate’s testimony, the prisoners Ramsés Vargas Arce and Ismael Verdecia Porro have been in the warehouse with a very high fever since Saturday.
The young man points out that from time to time a prisoner, a nurse or a doctor, walks through the corridors asking who has a fever. Likewise, he refers that both the health medical personnel and the prison authorities are careful to mention the word “dengue”.
Yuri Almenares González explained to CubaNet that some inmates with fever have been injected with duralgin, although it indicates that this medicine does not seem to be available in the prison, since those affected are not receiving any treatment.
At the close of this information, protesters on July 11, 2021 (11J) also reported the existence of other prisoners with high fever and headache and joint pain in that prison.
Regarding the judicial process against him, the prisoner announced that his trial was rescheduled again, this time for August 3 in the People’s Provincial Court, as his brother was notified by telephone.
This Friday, the Minister of Public Health of Cuba (MINSAP), José Ángel Portal Miranda, called for community participation and work centers for the control and prevention of dengue.
In statements reproduced by official media of the Island, the official assured that it was “a battle that belongs to everyone and in which individual, family and administration and labor collective self-responsibility is essential to prevent the proliferation of the mosquito Aedes aegypti”.
