SUS had a record with 14.7 million elective surgeries in 2025

In 2025, the Unified Health System (SUS) performed at least 14.7 million elective surgeries across the country, the highest number recorded in one year. The result was celebrated by the federal government this Friday (6). SUS had a record with 14.7 million elective surgeries in 2025

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and the Minister of Health, Alexandre Padilha, at an event in Salvador, highlighted that the number is related to public policies. “There were 14 million surgeries last year because we are willing to end the queue and ensure that poor people are respected in this country”, stated the president.

Padilha assessed that the result should also be celebrated due to the partnership between the federal government and the states, municipalities, philanthropic and private hospitals that joined the Agora has specialists program and served SUS patients. Before, the highest number of surgeries was recorded in 2024with 13.6 million procedures.

“It turns out that, due to the new Agora Tem Especialistas table, which pays a much higher amount than the old SUS table, this encourages states, municipalities, and philanthropic hospitals to carry out the procedures”, stated the Ministry of Health.

Basic care

Padilha, in a press interview, said that the SUS is the public health system that performs the most surgery. Across the country, the forecast is to distribute a total of 150 surgical combos focusing on hospital care and another 10 thousand combos to basic health units, increasing the resolution of Primary Care in the SUS.

In Bahia, the federal government delivered 1,030 sets of equipment to expand service in the state in basic health units. Devices such as a cold chamber for vaccines, digital scales and therapeutic lasers for wound treatment and rehabilitation were delivered, among others for carrying out exams in primary care.

“City halls also received 575,000 telehealth kits, a revolution in the SUS. We are also delivering 107 more ambulances from Samu, and now Bahia has 100% SUS service,” said Padilha.
