Survivor of plane crash in Havana denounces lack of medication

Mailen Díaz Almaguer, Cuba, accidente aéreo, medicamentos

MAYABEQUE, Cuba.- Mailen Díaz Almaguer, the only survivor of the Cubana de Aviación accident that took place in May 2018 on the island, denounced through Facebook the lack of medicines and asked his followers for help.

“I never go direct on social networks, but I have reached a point where I have felt compelled to do so, to denounce the things that happen through this channel because perhaps I will find help here. Not everything is as it appears to be. I also spend work as everyone spends work. If I am doing this today it is because I have felt very tight, too much, to the extreme, ”she said.

The young woman let the public know that she makes calls every day to the medical personnel who treat her due to the need she has for materials such as gloves, lubricants and 12-gauge catheters that she uses to urinate with an intermittent catheter.

“I have been told that there are no gloves or lubricant in the entire country,” said the young woman.

The lack of these materials can lead to recurrent infections, so Almaguer must take a Nitrofurantoin tablet daily, a drug that is currently in short supply in Cuba.

“It is not possible that so many things have been done to save me at the time as looking for medicines anywhere in the world, as they told me, and today that I am alive and I need gloves and lubricant, there are none,” she added.

“I am denouncing him because I am tired. I have a spinal cord injury and I have to do five hours a day of physiotherapy and also have my head worried that I have to make calls to get a lubricant and gloves, “Almaguer also pointed out.

Her husband, Mario Jesús Rodríguez, who also participated in the broadcast, said that the ruler of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, was a hypocrite for sending postcards to his wife on women’s days and in turn not having basic materials for his attention.

Rodríguez assured that they have requested an interview with the president, but they have denied it.

“I do not have to thank Cuban health, but to everyone who has done their bit so that I feel better and stronger today. Thanks to those people who know who they are,” said the survivor.

Finally, the young woman recounted how the paramedics stole her belongings while they were transferring her to the Calixto García hospital in Havana on the day of the accident: “In the ambulance that took me to the hospital, all my belongings were stolen, including my engagement ring. I reported them. When they held the trial, my family went and they confessed that they noticed my clothes at a time when I fell off the stretcher as a result of the ambulance braking.

“They paid me 36 thousand Cuban pesos for that crime. When I went to collect them, they demanded that I leave in writing what I was going to spend that money on, as if it were a large amount, ”he added.

Mailen Díaz Almaguer spent almost 12 months recovering after the plane crash that it cost the lives of the rest of the passengers (112 people) who were traveling on the aircraft, which crashed minutes after taking off from the José Martí Airport in Havana.
