Surprise!: Raúl Castro is nominated as a candidate for deputy in “elections”

Raúl Castro, Cuba

CDMX, Mexico.- At 91 years old, the Army General, Raul Castrowas nominated today as a candidate for deputy of the National Assembly of Popular Power of Cuba (parliament), announced Latin Press.

The nomination of the dictator took place during an extraordinary session in the municipal assembly of II Frente, territory of the province of Santiago de Cuba.

The list of candidates for deputies to the Cuban parliament that was released to the press specifies that this legislative body will be made up of 470 representatives, of which 223 are grassroots delegates.

In December 2022, the secretary of the ANPP, Homero Acosta Álvarez, reported that the Cuban legislative body would have 135 fewer deputies in 2023 and said that the decision was the result of “having changed the ratio of deputies per number of inhabitants in the country ”.

Prensa Latina adds that starting tomorrow, February 6, and until March 24, “the candidates will tour the territories for which they were nominated to dialogue with the population.”

These nominations, far from being spontaneous, are the result of the supervision and wishes of the PCC, which controls every level of the country’s electoral process.

Raúl does not leave power

In April 2021, at almost 90 years of age and during the VIII Congress of the Communist Party of CubaRaúl Castro announced that he would cease his functions as First Secretary, not because anything forced him to, but to set an example, he assured.

Despite this, he has continued to symbolically preside over the sessions of the National Assembly of Power. He even the official press prioritizes and gives more relevance to his presence, above that of Miguel Díaz-Canel, current president and first secretary of the Party
