Surgeons from EsSalud Puno remove a giant 4.5 kilo ovarian tumor from a woman

A team of surgeons from Base Hospital III Puno of the Social Health Security (EsSalud) managed to remove a giant ovarian tumor of approximately 4.5 kilos and 25 centimeters in diameter to a woman of 44 yearsin a highly complex surgical intervention that lasted for nearly four hours.

The patient, identified by the initials MVVentered the service of Emergencies with a box of intense abdominal pain. Tomographic studies showed a large tumor mass dependent on the left ovarywith suspicious signs of malignancy, which motivated the immediate intervention of the Oncological Surgery.

Tumor twisting allowed timely detection

The operation was carried out by the team led by Dr. Marco Antonio Quispe Choquechambiwho reported that during the procedure it was confirmed that the tumor had a 270 degree twista situation that caused acute pain and made it possible to detect the oncological process before it spread to other organs.

During surgery it was also found bloody ascitic fluid and the rupture of the tumor capsule. However, the extension examinations did not show carcinomatosis or distant metastasisindicating a diagnosis in early stage.

Complete oncological staging surgery

As part of the treatment, a staging surgery for ovarian cancerwhich included tumor resection, uterus, both annexeshe greater omentum and the appendixin addition to peritoneal biopsiespelvic sampling and aspiration of ascitic fluid.

“The tumor occupied a large part of the abdominopelvic cavity and represented an imminent risk to the patient’s life, because it was broken, twisted and actively bleeding,” explained the Dr. Quispewho highlighted that timely attention was decisive for the favorable result.

Recovery and complementary treatment

Currently, the patient is in recovery phase and will continue with adjuvant treatmentwhich will include chemotherapy and periodic medical check-ups. According to specialists, overall survival probabilities are favorablethanks to early detection of the disease.

Call for early detection

The oncological surgeon stressed the importance of going to health services in a timely manner. He indicated that the patient reported having palpated the tumor for more than three yearsbut recently sought medical attention due to severe pain.

“You should not wait until the symptoms are serious. In the event of any mass or unusual change in the body, it is essential to go to the doctor immediately,” he emphasized.

For his part, the executive president of EsSalud, Dr. Segundo Acho Megocongratulated the medical team and highlighted the commitment of the Hospital Base III Puno in the specialized and humanized care of highly complex oncological cases.
