During the year 2022, among the crimes known by the courts in which intentional death was inflicted on women, 18 cases were processed where there was “violence based on gender or family”, reported the People’s Supreme Court (TSP).
According to the highest Cuban justice body, the sexist murders occurred against women in a majority age range between 20 and 44 years and that 70% of the victims were white women.
The culprits of these murders received sanctions of more than 25 years in prison and, in some cases, of perpetual deprivation of freedom.
This communication is It is announced a few days after the high court confirmed the life sentence against two men previously sentenced for sexist violence.
These are the first sanctions against feminicides —who were sanctioned for the crime of murder, given that the crime of gender violence is not criminalized on the island— made public in 2023.
The observatories of groups such as Alas Tensas and Yo Sí Te Creo have confirmed 27 murders for gender reasons in Cuba so far in 2023.
The Supreme Court argued that in the Criminal Code, which entered into force at the end of 2022, “more rigorous sanctions against all acts of gender violence” were implemented. And that “in cases in which the death of a woman is caused for these reasons, the sanctions provided range from 20 to 30 years of temporary deprivation of liberty, perpetual deprivation or death.”
