This Tuesday, May 9, the Supreme Court of Justice (CSJ), of Nicaragua, suspended “definitely” the lawyer Yonarqui Martínez from the exercise of her professionwho has been one of the defenders of political prisoners.

“Ms. Yonarqui de los Ángeles Martínez García is sanctioned with final suspension of the exercise of the professions of Lawyer and Notary Public, from the notification of this sentence”, reads the circular issued by the justice system of the Ortega regime.

For their part, the CSJ authorities notified judges and courts throughout the country of said sentence, to warn that Martínez cannot act as a lawyer.

Yonarqui Martinez She is one of the most prominent lawyers for political prisoners in the country. Since the beginning of the social crisis in Nicaragua, he led the defense of political prisoners until they were released by court ruling or by the controversial Amnesty Law. He has received death threats, sieges, persecution, highway attacks and shots at his home.

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) granted precautionary measures in favor of the defender and has asked the State to guarantee her right to life and personal integrity, noting that Martínez and her family “are in a serious and urgent situation.”

The agency has also demanded that Ortega allow the jurist “to carry out her work as a defense lawyer, without being subjected to acts of intimidation, persecution, harassment, threats or other acts of violence in the exercise of the same, as well as to report periodically on compliance with the precautionary measures” themselves that have been ignored by the regime.
