Supreme Court of Brazil orders the house arrest of former president Jair Bolsonaro

Home arrest of Bolsonaro shudders Brazil while Lula announces his candidacy for re -election

The Supreme Federal Court of Brazil on Monday ordered the household arrest of the former president Jair Bolsonaro. The measure arises in full instruction of a judicial process that accuses him of leading an attempt with a coup to remain in power after his defeat in the presidential elections of 2022.

Judge Alexandre de Moraes, in charge of the case, argued that Bolsonaro breached the precautionary measures when communicating through the social networks of his three legislators, and therefore decided to harden the restrictions.

Bolsonaro must remain in his residence in Brasilia, deprived of the use of mobile phones, he can only receive visits from family members and lawyers, and will be under electronic monitoring.

This arrest occurs at a critical moment for Brazil, where political tensions have worsened and the country faces a diplomatic and commercial crisis with the United States, which recently imposed 50 % tariffs on Brazilian products, linking this measure as retaliation of the White House by the judicial process against Bolsonaro.

President Donald Trump protested against what he called a judicial “witch hunt” against his ally Bolsonaro, generating a wave of nationalism and firm positions of the Brazilian authorities, including President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva himself.

Lula da Silva confirms his intention to re -elect in 2026

The current President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva confirmed his intention to present himself as a candidate in the presidential elections of 2026, as long as his health status permits it, several press agencies referred to, among them Europa Press and Xinhuá.

The announcement was made within the framework of the National Meeting of the Workers Party (PT) in the city of Brasilia.

“To be a candidate, I have to be very honest with myself. I need to be completely healthy […] I will never cheat the party, or the Brazilian people, ”said the president, who in October of next year would be over 80 years old, the same month in which there will be general elections.

During a speech, the former metallurgical leader criticized opposition sectors and “fascist leaders” who, according to him, maintain links with the United States and support measures such as tariffs imposed by the Trump administration against Brazil.

In this context, the president reaffirmed national sovereignty and his willingness to strengthen diversified commercial relations, looking for alternatives to reduce the economic dependence of the United States and promote greater autonomy and multipolarity in Brazilian international politics.

President Lula has intensified his criticism against political figures such as Eduardo Bolsonaro, son of the former president, whom he described as “enemy of Brazil” for promoting sanctions that directly affected the economy and stability of the country.

“We are living a political excretion: a guy who campaigned in the Brazilian flag is now wrapped in the United States flag and asking for taxes against Brazil,” said the president in allusion to the deputy of Sao Paulo for the Liberal Party.

Faced with these external pressures, Lula emphasized the need to defend democracy and build a political system that respects national symbols and constitutional principles.

Judgment to former police chiefs and complaints of the Brazilian Chancellor

While Brazil crosses this tense juncture, justice also advances on other delicate fronts.

The Federal Supreme Court’s First Chamber began this week the trial of seven former heads of the Military Police of the Federal District, accused by the Attorney General’s Office in the coup acts of January 8, 2023.

According to the accusation, these officials did not act to prevent invasion and vandalism at the venues of the three powers of the State, despite having constitutional means and duties to do so, becoming indirect responsible for crimes that also face the pro-rational protesters.

On the other hand, Mauro Vieira, Chancellor of Brazil, denounced an “outrageous collusion” between Brazilian actors and foreign forces to destabilize institutions and undermine national sovereignty.

In the midst of the recent diplomatic climbing with the United States, Vieira said that Brazil will firmly defend its democratic system and reject all external interference that intends to interfere in its constitutional order.

He also highlighted the importance of multilateralism and the construction of a multipolar world, contrasting it to “unilateral arbitrarism” and the “empire of the law of the jungle”, committing Brazil with an active role in the global redistribution of power.
