Support for labor?: conclusions of the meeting between Petro and the Spanish Mintrabajo

The second vice president and Minister of Labor of Spain, Yolanda Díaz, supported the labor reform being processed by the Colombian Executive in Congress and met with President Gustavo Petro, with whom he spoke about the importance of strengthening relations between Latin America and Europe.

“I have met with Gustavo Petro to talk about the shared challenges between our countries and the need to build more supportive and horizontal relations between Latin America and Europe. To advance together towards common horizons is to go further,” Díaz expressed in a message published this Friday in X, where he published two photos with the Colombian president.

The Colombian Presidency highlighted that Díaz, who participated in the XXII Ibero-American Conference of Ministers of Labor held in Bogotá, supported the Government’s labor reform.

“Minister Yolanda Díaz held a meeting with President Gustavo Petro, in which they shared ideas about the Labor Reform in Colombia and ‘total peace,'”
added the office of the Colombian head of state in a statement.

The Spanish ambassador to Colombia, Joaquín de Arístegui, participated in that meeting; the counselor of Labor, Migration and Social Security of the Embassy of Spain in Colombia, Julio Cruz, and the Special Commissioner for the Social Economy, Jaime Iglesias.

Also present were the Colombian Minister of Labor, Gloria Inés Ramírez; the vice minister of Labor Affairs, Luisa Fernanda Gómez, and director of Fundamental Rights, Juan Nicolás Escandón.

On October 17, the Colombian House of Representatives approved in a second debate the labor reform presented by the Government, which will now continue its legislative process in the Senate, where it will have to go through two more debates.

The legislative proposal was approved with 93 votes in favor and 13 against, and now must pass the obstacle of Commission VI and the plenary session of the Senate. where the Government does not have majorities and other reforms such as health have fallen.

Among the articles contained in this project are the increase in night surcharge hours, guarantees of union rights, increase in paternity leaves and regulates work of digital platforms, among others.

However, other articles that the opposition rejected fell by the wayside, such as guaranteeing that farm workers have, at least, a minimum wage or compensation for dismissal without just cause.
