MIAMI, United States. — A plane from the Canadian company Sunwing Airlines landed in an emergency this afternoon at the Juan Gualberto Gómez International Airport in Varadero, reported in social networks the official journalist Lázaro Manuel Alonso.
The aircraft, which took off from the Abel Santamaría International Airport in Santa Clara bound for Montreal (Canada), presented problems with its left landing gear.
“They confirm that a Sunwing 307 plane, which left the Santa Clara airport in an emergency, bound for Montreal, managed to land at the Varadero airport. After takeoff, the aircraft presented problems with the left landing gear,” the reporter reported.
According to Lázaro Manuel Alonso, the plane had to perform maneuvers to land while keeping the crew safe.
“The plane carried out maneuvers over the province of Matanzas until it managed to land passengers and crew. The passengers are already descending from the aircraft. Good news that comes after several tense minutes”.
Images shared by the Caribbean Channel show several crew members of the aircraft being evacuated while the plane remained on the runway, as dictated by the protocols for these cases.
For several years Sunwing Airlines has been one of the airlines that guarantees the arrival of Canadian tourism to Cuba, mainly to destinations such as Cayo Santa María, Varadero, Cayo Coco and Holguín.
Sunwing Airlines is a company based in Etobicoke, Toronto, Ontario that offers scheduled and charter flights to more than 60 destinations around the world.
The airline, a subsidiary of Sunwing Travel Group, one of the largest in that sector in Canada, also makes seasonal flights, generally in summer, the parent company operating as a travel agency.
Recently, a Cuban nationalized Canadian who traveled to Cuba with a friend on a Sunwing aircraft couldn’t get off the plane by order of the authorities of the Island.
The woman, who tried to disembark at Holguín’s Frank País International Airport, was denied official entry into the country due to posts on social media criticizing Cuban regime officials.
