The Chancellery of the Dominican Republic announced this Monday that it is postponing the 10th Summit of the Americas to 2026, which would initially be held on December 4 and 5 in Punta Cana.
“In 2022, at the time of assuming responsibility for holding the Summit of the Americas, the deep divergences that currently hinder productive dialogue in the Americas were unforeseeable. Added to this situation is the impact caused by recent climate events that have seriously affected several Caribbean countries,” the Foreign Ministry explained in a statement.

“This postponement entails new consultations on the date of the Summit and expanding the dialogue to include the new democratically elected governments that emerge,” the Foreign Ministry said.
Exclusions before postponement
The announcement by the Dominican Government on September 30 not to invite Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela, in order to favor “the largest gathering and ensure the development of the forum”, generated criticism and the decision of the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, and her colleague from Colombia, Gustavo Petro, not to attend the event.
Now, the decision to postpone the Summit to next year “has been agreed upon with our closest partners, including the United States, the original promoter of this forum, and other key countries,” the Foreign Ministry noted in its statement.
Since it was approved as the venue, the Dominican Republic has been working “hard” to guarantee the success of the event, and “has fully complied with all the requirements of this commitment.”
Colombian president will not attend the Summit of the Americas
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed its gratitude to “all” the efforts to support the organization of the conclave. He cited “brother countries, international organizations, representatives of the private sector, youth, civil society and the institutions of the Dominican Government,” whose commitment and enthusiasm are essential.
For his part, the US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, said yesterday that his country “fully supports the decision to postpone” the Summit of the Americas announced by the Dominican Republic, the host country, and hoped to be able to organize a “productive” meeting in 2026, according to a report by EFE.
