Summit of the Americas is postponed due to tensions

El canciller dominicano consultó a varios países de la región sobre la posposición.

SANTO DOMINGO.- The Dominican Government announced the postponement to next year of the tenth Summit of the Americas, which was scheduled to be held in early December, a decision that was immediately supported by the United States.

The announcement indicates that the suspension was agreed upon with the country’s main partners as well as with representatives of international organizations such as the Organization of American States (OAS).
and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

The measure was adopted as a result of an atmosphere of warlike tension that reigns on the continent, especially due to the incursions of the United States in the Caribbean region and the siege of the Nicolás Maduro regime in Venezuela.

Rubio’s endorsement
Shortly after the announcement of the postponement of the Summit of the Americas was made public, the Secretary of State of the United States, Marco Rubio, issued a statement on his social networks thanking the Dominican Republic for hosting the summit and supporting the postponement to 2026.

“We fully support the decision to postpone the summit and will continue to collaborate with the Dominican Republic and other countries in the region to plan a productive event in 2026 that focuses on strengthening alliances and improving the security of our citizens,” Rubio wrote.

The statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicates that currently there is no environment
for a productive dialogue in the region.

The statement points out that at the time of assuming the headquarters of the Summit “the profound divergences that currently hinder a productive dialogue in the Americas were unforeseeable.”

The Foreign Ministry explained that the resources invested to date in the organization of the event will be maintained and will be used for the organization of the Summit on its new date.

He explained that in addition to the geopolitical situation, there is the impact of recent climate phenomena that seriously affected several Caribbean countries.

The Government thanked the allied countries for their support and reiterated its commitment to multilateralism, good neighborliness and regional integration, emphasizing that the decision “does not cool relations” with any partner or alters the desire for dialogue that characterizes Dominican foreign policy.
