Súmate reiterates the call for the release of its coordinator Nélida Sánchez

Súmate reports that its coordinator Nélida Sánchez was brought to court

Nélida Sánchez was arrested on August 26, 2024 by agents of the Bolivarian National Intelligence Service (Sebin). In November, the organization denounced that a judge “violated the constitutional rights” of the activist by deciding “to go to trial maintaining the five crimes charged in the presentation hearing,” based on a police report that “involves the vice of false assumption»

The NGO Súmate reiterated this Wednesday, December 25, its call for the release of its Training Coordinator, Nélida Sánchez, who was detained 122 days ago and remains at the Caracas headquarters of the Bolivarian National Intelligence Service (Sebin).

Through X, the NGO regretted that, at Christmas, Sánchez “has been deprived of enjoying this Christian holiday with his family and friends.”

Likewise, the non-governmental organization assured that the activist – accused of terrorism, incitement to hatred, conspiracy, treason and criminal association – was “unjustly” detained.

“She is innocent, freedom for Nélida,” said Súmate, who asked the State, on December 13, to guarantee “impartial justice” so that Sánchez can prove her innocence and regain her freedom.

Nélida Sánchez Case

In November, the organization denounced that a judge “violated the constitutional rights” of the activist by deciding “to go to trial maintaining the five crimes charged in the presentation hearing,” based on a police report that “involves the vice of false assumption.

The arrest of the coordinator occurred in a context of political crisis unleashed after the controversial re-election of Nicolás Maduro in the presidential elections on July 28, a period in which the largest opposition coalition, which denounces electoral “fraud”, has warned about the increase in “persecution” and “repression” by the Government.

Last September, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) granted precautionary measures in favor of Sánchez, considering that he is in “a serious and urgent situation of risk of irreparable damage to his rights.”

Nélida Sánchez was arrested on August 26, 2024 by agents of the Bolivarian National Intelligence Service (Sebin). On August 28, 2024, she was transferred to an unknown location. Sánchez’s relatives indicated that he suffers from illnesses that require special care.

Since last November 16, political prisoners have been released, the most recent this Monday, December 23 and Tuesday, December 24.

Despite the recent releases, a kind of revolving door has been operating, where there are more and more complaints from activists, politicians and detained or missing people; among them, three leaders from the Bolívar state, linked to Vente Venezuela (VV) and Voluntad Popular; the mayor of Cabimas, Nabil Maalouf; and the leader of VV in Chacao Luis Palocz.
