Sukhoi incident has operational, institutional and media implications

The accident of the Sukhoi 30 acronym 3363 plane, during the parade practices on July 5, has left several readings. From Control Ciudadano they emphasize that it is the first time, in two decades, that the causes of an accident of this type are reported. In 2001, the plane F16 acronym 6611 fell in Barcelona, Anzoátegui state, due to a vulture; the aircraft crashed in the vicinity of the Lieutenant Air Base (AV) Luis Del Valle García

The accident of the Sukhoi 30 acronym 3363 plane, which occurred on July 2 during the practices of the July 5 parade, in the Maitana sector of Paracotos (Miranda), has given rise to several analyzes on the operation of the National Armed Forces (FAN). ) and about the messages that are issued from the military organization. From Control Ciudadano they emphasize that it is the first time, in two decades, that the causes of an accident of this type are reported.

“For the first time in more than two decades, the causes of an accident with FAN aircraft are indicated,” the lawyer pointed out. Rocio San Miguel, director of the aforementioned NGO on July 4 via Twitter. The organization has followed up on military aircraft accidents and has emphasized the opacity surrounding these cases.

In November 2022, Social Watch highlighted the lack of information on the causes of air accidents “that compromise the life and integrity of members of the National Armed Forces and affect assets that make up the State’s assets.”

Until then, only in two of these four accidents with military aircraft in 2022 had an official statement been issued. However, “the causes of the accidents, nor the results of the investigative committees, nor the corrective measures carried out” had never been expressed.

On July 3, the Minister of Defense, General in Chief Vladimir Padrino López, in a statement reported the first results of the investigation into the recent Sukhoi accident: “The ingestion of a bird through the right engine, which generated fire in it, and even when the crew applied the emergency procedures, canceling the mission and heading to the airbase of origin, the fire was not extinguished and the aircraft became out of control, so the pilots, applying the established protocol, they carried out the ejection.

The accident, which is the third to occur with the Sukhoi purchased from Russia, left the balance of the deceased pilot and the injured co-pilot. Paulino José Millán Sabino had recently been promoted to the rank of Colonel, first on the list, and He was promoted post mortem to the rank of Brigadier General.. The wounded officer is Lieutenant Colonel Sergio Luis Hernández Gómez.

The FAN attributed the death of officer Millán Sabino to “mechanical asphyxia due to extrinsic compression of the neck.” Nicolás Maduro said on television that the pilot “hanged himself” with the ejection system.

From the FAN, they emphasized that the work of the Air Accident Investigation Board continues in the case of the Sukhoi accident. From Control Ciudadano they have insisted that Venezuelans “have the right to know the results of the investigation, meanwhile the operation of the FAN is in question.”

For their part, both the ruler Nicolás Maduro and the minister Padrino López demanded respect for the military institution.

«I reiterate my firm defense and solidarity to our Military Aviation and the entire military family of the FANB, in the face of hatred, mockery and manipulation of the media scoundrel. We denounce the campaign that is being financed from the North American empire to do damage through social networks, to the climate of peace, tolerance and respect that we have conquered by hand. Venezuelan people alert!” Maduro pointed out on July 3 during his program “With Maduro +”.

On July 4, during the promotion of generals and admirals, Maduro said he was outraged by the “rogue” attacks against General Paulino José Millán Sabino, who died in the July 2 incident, and who was the first of his class. . “Long live the FANB, enough of the hatred, enough of the fascists,” he asserted.

The Sukhoi in Venezuela

Before July 2, two other FAN Sukhoi 30s had crashed: Sukhoi acronym 0406 in the accident on September 7, 2015 in Apure and Sukhoi acronym 0457 that crashed to the ground on October 16, 2019 in the Guarico state.

These planes began to arrive in the country in 2006 after the technical-military cooperation agreements signed by former President Hugo Chávez with the Russian Federation.

A retired aviation colonel, consulted by SuchWhich and who asked to withhold his name, noted that the Sukhoi accident on July 3 has many readings: “The operational, the technological, the institutional (Military Aviation); the media, the organizational (FAN); the social and, logically, the political.

The military man refers that, in 2001, the plane F16 acronym 6611 fell in Barcelona, Anzoátegui state, due to a vulture. This aircraft crashed in the vicinity of the Lieutenant Air Base (AV) Luis Del Valle García. According to the reports at the time, “the cause of the accident was presumably the ramming of a flock of birds (vultures) against the plane, one of which was absorbed by the turbine, causing a fire in the aircraft.”

In this case, the pilot, Colonel Héctor D’Armas, was located and rescued alive, “who managed to eject and resulted in a fractured right hand and was transferred to the local hospital.”

Before that, a military accident was registered, also involving an F16, in Barquisimeto, Lara, in the 1990s.

He adds that any version that is issued outside the Air Accident Investigation Board becomes a “lucubration”.

“You must be there in command of the aircraft to know exactly what happened. And many times there are temporary, auditory and visual distortions when facing a death threat”, points out the retired colonel.

Likewise, the soldier points out that one of the pilots of the crashed Sukhoi was left alive. In this sense, he expresses that “the problem of death was not in the plane, it was in the ejection. There are always high chances of these things happening there because these parachutes are slow to fall and are not very maneuverable (the pilot usually falls in a faint).”

«Personally, I take my hat off to that pilot (Millán Sabino). The way he handled the situation is admirable”, he adds.

On the other hand, the official emphasizes that the need to prohibit the military parade in Caracas has been mentioned since the government of President Carlos Andrés Pérez: “This is a high-risk maneuver because of what it means to put so many planes at low altitude in such a confined area.”
