MIAMI, United States. — Subtropical storm Nicole could make landfall in Florida this Thursday, according to forecasts from the US National Hurricane Center (NHC).
At 4 p.m. today, the center of the storm was located at 27.5 degrees north latitude and 73.7 degrees west longitude, about 460 kilometers northeast of The Bahamas and about 640 kilometers east of West Palm Beach.
The organism reaches maximum sustained winds of 100 kilometers per hour (km/h) and is moving west at 17 km/h. The NHC indicates that the trend is towards the intensification of the system, which could become a hurricane this Wednesday.
Nicole is expected to begin to tilt its course west-northwest in a zigzag pattern tomorrow, then move in a northwesterly and north-northwesterly direction.
“On the forecast track, the center of Nicole will approach the northwestern Bahamas tonight, move near or over those islands on Wednesday, and reach the Florida coast Wednesday night or Thursday morning.
Rain accumulations of between three and five inches are expected in several areas of Florida, which could reach eight in some locations. Storm surges will also occur along the entire east coast of that state, which will be more intense in the areas closest to the trajectory of the organism.
The NHC also warns about the possible occurrence of isolated tornadoes between Wednesday and Friday in areas of the east coast of Florida, Georgia and South Carolina.
