The National Police presented on March 9 a Jorge Adalberto Rios, 63 years old, as the main perpetrator of the parricide against Facunda Ríos, 82. The suspect is the first-born son of the victim.

According to the prosecution’s accusation, the old woman’s refusal to give her son money to buy liquor was what provoked the anger of Jorge Adalberto Ríos against his mother, who took her life after attacking her with “clubs” the night on the fourth of March. The crime occurred in the Santa Isabel neighborhood of the city of Boaco.

In the accusatory brief it was revealed that first, the subject beat his mother with a stick until she broke it and then grabbed the victim’s wooden cane and continued to attack her on the bed until she was killed.

“Showing total contempt for life, the accused left the place after committing the crime,” said prosecutor Mileydis Laso Membreño.

The delegate of the Prosecutor’s Office also pointed out that the defendant made use of the defenseless state of the victim, who was an elderly person.

He added that the old woman lived alone, but her son came to visit her frequently and stayed to sleep in the house.

The forensic doctor who performed the autopsy on Facunda Ríos confirmed that as a result of the blows to her arms, hands, face, and skull, the old woman had multiple fractures. In addition, she concluded that the victim died as a result of intracranial hemorrhage caused by the blows given by her son.

The judge of the Boaco Criminal Court District, Aracelly Amador Zambrana, ordered Jorge Adalberto Ríos preventive detention and scheduled the initial hearing for March 20.

With the femicide of Facunda Ríos, the list of victims of sexist violence extends to eight so far in 2023 —five in January and three in February, only in Nicaragua, according to the feminist organization Catholics for the Right to Decide.

The organization highlights that there have been another eight femicides abroad for a total of 16. The perpetrators of the crimes have been mostly partners, ex-partners or close relatives of the victims.

“There have been 16 femicides in the first three months of the year, leaving Nicaraguan families in mourning (…) That is why we say that femicide is worse than the pandemic (of COVID-19), because with the pandemic measures are taken to prevent , but in femicide no measures are taken or campaigns are carried out to reduce the macho culture of the aggressors in the face of women’s lives,” said a human rights defender.
