Suárez remembers Juan Izquierdo on the day he announces his farewell to the national team

Luis Suárez remembered this Monday, during a press conference in which he set a date for his farewell to the Uruguay national team, his former teammate from Nacional Juan Manuel Izquierdo, who died last Tuesday in a São Paulo hospital after collapsing during a Copa América match.

Before announcing his decision, the striker sent his condolences to Izquierdo’s family, while sending “a lot of strength” at this difficult time to his wife, his parents, his two children, his sister, his friends and his loved ones. “As a representative of the national team, the players will be at the disposal of his family in these difficult times,” he said.

He also recalled his time at Nacional in the second half of 2022, when he was Izquierdo’s teammate and together they won the Uruguayan Championship that season. Izquierdo passed away last Tuesday at the age of 27 in the Brazilian city of São Paulo, following a brain death after a cardiorespiratory arrest.
