A survey shows that 73.5% of São Paulo families were in debt in November, the highest percentage since 2010. The data are from the Consumer Debt and Default Survey (Peic), by FecomercioSP.
According to the study, there are 2.93 million families with debts in the capital of São Paulo, 710 thousand more since the cycle of 12 consecutive highs that began in November last year.
In November, the percentage of defaulting families (those who, in addition to having contracted the debt, were unable to pay it on the due date) was 20.4%, the highest level since April of last year (21.6%). There are 815,000 families currently with overdue bills.
The default rate remained practically stable throughout 2021, fluctuating close to 19%. In the last three months, there was an increase of 18.8% in August to 20.4% in November.
Of the percentage of indebtedness, the credit card stands out as the main type of debt, with just over 70% defaulting at the beginning of the year, and reaching 85% in November, the highest level in the historical series.
The second largest type of debt is the payment book with 21.7% of indebtedness. In the first half of the year, the index fluctuated close to 14%. This modality is used by consumers for installment purchases, in installments, of greater value, directly in retail stores.
