D1 and Ara stores are at the top of the list, followed by Éxito, Olímpica, Dollarcity, Ísimo, SurtiMAX, and Jumbo, among others. According to the study, currently, 81 out of 100 Colombian households make their purchases at D1, while 43 out of 100 choose Tiendas Ara and 7 out of 100 do so at Ísimo.
Éxito and Olímpica also show a notable market penetration, with 29 and 24 households out of 100, respectively. On the other hand, Carulla reaches only 6 out of 100 households, which reflects a lower preference compared to low-cost stores.
Independent supermarkets are the most sought after
In the first quarter of 2024, these low-cost supermarkets recorded the highest sales growth nationwide, up 13%. This increase was only surpassed by independent supermarkets, which posted a 13.2% increase.
This rise in preference for ‘discenter’ stores is due to several factors. Colombian consumers are increasingly looking for affordable options without sacrificing quality, which has led to an increase in the popularity of these supermarkets. In addition, the competitive pricing strategy and the wide range of basic products have positioned D1 and Ara as market leaders.
The Nielsen study also highlights the importance of accessibility and convenience offered by these stores, which are strategically located in different areas of the country, allowing consumers to easily access basic necessities at affordable prices.
