under the motto “Educating about lupus”doctors Lilian Gómez, a second-year resident, and Rossana Vera, a third-year resident, from the subspecialty of Adult Nephrology at the Faculty of Medical Sciences of the UNA, have presented their Clinical studies in the aforementioned contest.
The doctors are participating in the theoretical-practical course proposed by GLADEL, thus encouraging future specialists and pooling information to new treatments in the area of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus.

“GLADEL called a contest for which they requested cases of patients with lupusof which the most relevant would be selected, which will be presented at a Latin American meeting and in which two FCMUNA Adult Nephrology residents will present their clinical cases, based on situations of patients who come to the Hospital de Clínicas”, he explained. Dr. Marcelo Barrios, who forms the Latin American Lupus Group as a member, together with Dr. Carolina Vázquez, and Prof. Dr. Isabel Acosta, in the executive committee, at the national level.
“It’s just sugar” one of the papers presented is entitled, where Dr. Lilian Gómez mentioned that in the Department of Nephrology Adults care for lupus patients who reach renal involvement, and emphasized that the majority of lupus patients reach renal dysfunction; and where she highlights the diagnostic method through biopsy, which allows knowing the degree of kidney damage that the patient is having.

“What we wanted to do is highlight the importance of biopsies, a study that we carry out in our patients and in lupus patients here in the hospital; since it allows us to reach the diagnosis with certainty and if there is a kidney condition, and through this indicate the appropriate treatment,” said Dr. Lilian Gómez.
The case is about a patient from San Pedro, diabetic and lupus, in which kidney involvement is observed, a situation that through biopsy they hope to see if it is due to diabetes or lupus. It will be presented on October 21, at 7:00 p.m., via online before the GLADEL experts, Dr. Adriana Benegas, from Colombia, and Dr. Ernesto Cairoli, from Uruguay.
The second selected case was “Lupus, the great simulator” under the authorship of Dr. Rossana Vera. who will exhibit it on October 28, under the same modality proposed by GLADEL.
It is worth mentioning that the works were supervised by the rheumatology specialist Dr. Astrid Paats; and selected at a Latin American level among the 10 clinical cases that will be defended at the end of the course, and of these again 6 will be awarded with a subscription to an international journal.
