Students of La Plata obtained a valuable draw goalless in his visit to Athletico Paranaense, in the first leg of the quarterfinals of the Copa Libertadores 2022 played this Thursday in the Brazilian city of Curitiba (south).

The Argentines left the Arena da Baixada alive thanks to the solvency of their defense and the inability of world champion Luiz Felipe Scolari’s ‘Furacão’ to be sharp in goalkeeper Mariano Andújar’s area.

Though add three games in a row without winning between the Libertadores and the league, the result gives Ricardo Zielinski’s Pincha hope to fight for his fifth cup title, after those won in 1968, 1969, 1970 and 2009.

The winner of the series will be defined next Thursday in Argentina and will collide in the semis with the winner of the Brazilian duel between the two-time champion Palmeiras and Atletico Mineiro, whose first leg game ended 2-2.

Paranaense was far from being a ‘Furacão’, in part because the “Russian” Zielinski fulfilled his threat: although Estudiantes is doing poorly in Argentina, in the Cup he usually takes the caste of a four-time Libertadores champion and sells dearly for a possible defeat.

Far from being overwhelming, Pincha provoked two clear goal plays in Bento’s goal: a violent header from defender Luciano Lollo (17) that the goalkeeper sent, with his left hand, back to the corner and another flown (50) to clear a long left foot shot by Manuel Castro.

Without a fine creation, the rojinegros, champions of the South American 2021, they had a couple of occasions dangerous in the first part to make the more than 40,000 spectators who filled the Arena da Baixada celebrate.

The first chance looked catastrophic for the visitors. The Argentine Tomás Neck (25) lowered with his head a center from the right, the ball collided in the hand of the side Leonardo Godoy and the Venezuelan judge Jesús Valenzuela awarded a penalty. When Pablo was about to collect, the VAR intervened and the center-back canceled his decision after reviewing the play.

And the second chance, in 36, it was on a free kick from Khellven which required a stretch from Andújar to the lower left corner.

– The return of Fernandinho –

In the midst of shock parity Fernandinho’s performance stood out. After finishing his 17-year tour of Europe, the former captain of Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City returned to play in the Cup.

The last time was in July 2005, when Paranaense lost the title to Sao Paulo. This time he played with the number 50 on his back, embedding himself between the central defenders to guide the start and disturbing the Argentine defense with millimetric long passes.

its quality though was not enough for the Brazilians, who are fourth in the Brasileirao, eight points behind the leader Palmeiras, managed to break the line of five defenders proposed by Zielinski.

Although Scolari’s men approached the Andújar area more often in the second half, they did it mainly with long shots and aerial balls, some of which threatened to break the tie.

The lack of ideas doomed both, as well as the constant faults in midfield they cut the pace. The two coaches moved the bench; the Brazilian to refresh the attack, the Argentine to take care of the zero. In the end, Zielinski got his way.
