MIAMI, United States. – A gas leak of still undetermined origin forced the evacuation of the José Luis Dubrocq pre-university facilities in the city of Matanzasafter several students experienced dizziness, shortness of breath and redness.
According to the provincial newspaper Giron22 students are reported admitted to the Eliseo Noel Caamaño Provincial Pediatric Hospital, where they remain stable and without danger to life.
At the time of the emergency, the institution had 926 students and 65 workers. Initially, it was reported that eight of them had been affected and taken to the health center; However, an update offered at 10:50 am states that 22 young people have been admitted, of which 12 are in the Respiratory Room, four in Intermediate Therapy and six under observation.
The general director of Education in the province, Edilberto Casanova Barreto, noted that “the incident occurred close to the tenth grade classrooms and as a precaution it was decided to postpone the educational teaching process until Saturday.”
According to Girona commission is currently investigating the causes of the event. Meanwhile, the main authorities of the regime in the province—Mario Sabines Lorenzo, first secretary of the Party, and Marieta Poey Zamora, governor—went to the hospital to verify the health status of those affected.
According to the report, the gas responsible for the poisoning has not been identified, but the school will remain without regular activities until the investigations are concluded and the safety of the students and teaching staff is guaranteed.
