Student movement denounces attempted eviction of relatives of political prisoners in Zone 7

Miguel Ángel Suárez, president of the Federation of University Centers of the Central University of Venezuela (FCU-UCV), denounced an attempted forced eviction by members of the Bolivarian National Police against the peaceful vigil held by relatives of political prisoners and students in Zone 7.

The situation escalated after warnings from the uniformed officers, who, according to the student leader, use intimidation to break up the concentration. Given the seriousness of the events, Suárez issued a message of support and mobilization.

“Today they want to take a large part of the Zone 7 highway and they also threaten the relatives’ camp. We make a public call to Caracas residents, Venezuelans, students, Venezuelans, members of civil society to come forward. The situation is very worrying. We fear for the safety of the prisoners and their families, for reprisals,” he declared.

In the middle of the police cordon, the UCV Firefighters approached the scene to be able to intervene and provide medical assistance to several family members that have decompensated due to physical wear and tear and the emotional burden of being awake.

Despite the siege, the student movement confirmed that it will not abandon the place. The main demand, beyond liberation, is humanitarian in nature. They assure that will remain firm until the medicines are received to those deprived of liberty, many of whom have delicate health conditions.

Relatives of political prisoners continue to wait for release, while denouncing the gradual release of illegally detained people. According to the NGO Foro Penal, there are 139 people still deprived of their liberty, while the largest opposition coalition, the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD), reports 155.
