A structural failure in a culvert on the highway that connects the cities of Holguín and Moa, in the cuban eastcaused the interruption of traffic on that important road and the start of rehabilitation works.

The breakdown occurred last Saturday at the site known as El Obelisco, in the Holguin municipality of Urbano Noris, as a result of the collapse of the metal structures of the vault that supported the sewer, reports a report of the Cuban News Agency (ACN).

This fact forced to stop the passage of vehicles on the highway, considered “vital” in the area, “because it supports communication with the municipalities in the east of the province and the direct link with the city of Santiago de Cuba and its port, of great importance for the economy of Holguín”, points out the news release.

After the ruling, specialized construction forces work to restore road circulation “in the shortest possible time.”

Pavel Rodríguez, director of the Holguín Provincial Road Center, told the ACN that the damaged work had 80 years of “uninterrupted exploitation” and that “for its repair it was necessary to completely demolish it and rebuild the base with two rows of prefabricated concrete caissons that were assembled, in a period of just 36 hours.”

At the time of writing the note, work was being done “on the re-inflation of the factory work and the formwork of the areas where castings have to be undertaken”. According to Rodríguez, thanks to these works, the road should be open to traffic “in three or four more days.”

Until then, the authorities recommend that drivers use the itinerary from El Manguito to Cortadera as a “provisional detour”, to rejoin the highway through Alto de Nipe. This means that “the municipalities of Mayarí, Frank País, Sagua de Tánamo and Moa today are traveling 20 additional kilometers, and up to Santiago de Cuba 43 kilometers are added along this road for cargo and passengers.”

According to the agency, the Holguín-Moa highway “is a work approved in the province’s investment plan for the year 2022, although different actions have been carried out for several years for its rehabilitation.”

For this reason, work is also carried out on this road “in the sections of the promenade with the greatest danger for vehicular traffic, fundamentally from Loma de la Gloria to El Manguito.” There, the ACN points out, “more than four kilometers that are very critical for road safety have been resolved and work is being done on sewers like this one that, due to their old age, will be intervened on a scheduled basis.”

The poor condition of the roads is a long-standing problem on the Island, causing delays and interruptions in vehicular traffic. In addition, it is one of the most repeated causes of accidents, along with violations by drivers and technical problems with cars.
