Cristina Fernández de Kircher, Pedro Castillo, izquierda latinoamericana

Strong blows to the Latin American left

Havana Cuba. – In recent hours, important events, which occurred in two countries of Our America, have represented powerful blows dealt to prominent representatives of the continental left. In Argentina, the court that tried her has handed down a sentence —finally!— against the current vice president of the nation, Cristina Fernández, widow of Néstor Kirchner. In Peru, Pedro Castillo’s self-coup attempt fizzled out with astonishing speed. But it is better to go in parts.

In the great southern country, the accusation against the second president has lasted for years. The essence of the cause that is pursued lies in the actions of a prominent figurehead of the Kirchner couple: Lázaro Báez, an insignificant character who, thanks to the support of the powerful couple, overnight went from a simple bank teller to head of a powerful construction company.

By chance?, Báez’s company came to execute more than half of the public works carried out during the mandate of the husband first, and then the widow. The “good luck” of the makeshift businessman was astonishing. The newspaper The country informs us that, while the remaining builders took an average of 210 days to receive an award, the Kirchner’s friend obtained them in only 29.

Despite the fact that many of the works assumed by his company remained unfinished, Báez collected all of them. Only one was within the original budget; the rest required additional expenditures from the Treasury. A shocking anecdote is that of the also accused José López, who occupied the Ministry of Public Works. This politician was caught at the same moment trying to hide bags with millions of dollars in a convent.

Despite this background, and although the fraud to the State is estimated at more than a billion dollars, Cristina and her friends talk about lawfare (anglicism that alludes to the judicialization of politics). This is what the prominent accused has raised during the years of the process, and what she has just repeated on the occasion of the announcement of the sanctioning ruling: “This is a parallel State and mafia; judicial mafia ”, she exclaimed in a victim pose.

This important chapter of Kirchner’s “soap opera” was preceded by an unusual appearance by the president of the nation. Although he could not affirm that there were indications of any specific crime, the head of state requested the initiation of criminal proceedings against a series of public figures who visited the estate of a wealthy businessman in the south of the country.

The most scandalous thing about the matter is that, in his speech, Alfredo Fernández acknowledged that the essential elements on which he based his accusation came from the previous hacking of a private telephone. In other words: an absolutely and undoubtedly illegal means is used by the head of the Executive as a basis to question another of the powers of the State and accuse citizens who, by presumption, are supposed to be innocent!

As expected, the brotherhood of “smart partners of the 21st century” has unanimously grouped behind the convicted Cristina. There are the former prisoner for corruption Lula, Evo Morales, the Mexican AMLO. Also the Cuban Miguel Díaz-Canel, who wrote on his Twitter account: “We reiterate our rejection of politically motivated judicial processes and we reaffirm all our support and solidarity for Cristina Fernández de Kirchner in the face of judicial and media harassment against her.” .

Here it is worth noting, first of all, the astonishment caused by hearing about “politically motivated judicial processes” from the head honcho of a country in which citizens who have only peacefully protested against the bad government are sentenced to decades in jail. And incidentally, comment that, although the heads of state of bureaucratic socialism, with their declarations, interfere with absolute impudence in the internal affairs of the Argentine Republic, we already know that the Fernández government will not protest against it.

In the case of Peru, much less needs to be written: President Pedro Castillo, until yesterday, was facing the third vote in Congress to remove him. Perhaps for this reason, several of the “smart partners of the 21st century” had conspired to go on a pilgrimage to Lima, with the sole purpose of showing solidarity with their harassed buddy.

A few hours before the parliamentary session, Castillo decided to put his plans to carry out a self-coup into practice. In the address that he read, the president announced the dissolution of the Legislature, the establishment of a “national emergency government”, the implementation of the curfew; he also promised the holding of elections to choose a new Congress “with constituent powers”. The latter, it is already known, a common play among the aforementioned.

As he delivered his address, the paper that Don Pedro was reading fluttered like a flag in the wind. The self-coup attempt, as I already said, deflated with impressive speed; as the popular saying goes, it lasted as long as the classic “merengue at the door of a school”.

For starters, several of his own ministers resigned ipso facto; The Vice President of the Republic also announced her disagreement with the behavior of her superior, and described what happened as a “coup d’état.” Congress managed to meet, and by a large majority approved the recall; there were only six votes against and 10 abstentions. Dina Boluarte, constitutional substitute, became the first woman to assume the presidency of the sister country.

In short, who until this Wednesday was the Peruvian boss, had to leave the presidential mansion. Shortly after, it was announced that he remained under arrest in the Lima Prefecture, as a criminal caught in flagrante delicto. To end with the resignations, it has been published that this has been done… by his very own defense attorney, Benji Espinoza, who alleged that “a rupture of the constitutional order has occurred.”

We will have to see what the relatives of the dismissed do now. I suspect that, given the very little support that the ex-president has, the leftist leaders will play the “goats with nonsense”, and they will not be alluded to what happened in Peru. In any case, those two forceful blows dealt within the Law to the extremist left of Our America are very inspiring and comforting.
