When receiving Mexican ambassadors and consuls abroad yesterday at the National Palace, President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo made it clear that the Mexican government rejects the intervention of the United States in Venezuela, according to those attending the meeting held within the framework of the 37th Meeting of Ambassadors and Consuls (REC 2026).

At the meeting, the president shared details about the complex relationship she has had with US President Donald Trump, particularly in the 14 phone calls they have had since the beginning of his administration.

After the session, Sheinbaum noted on social networks that at the National Palace he spoke with members of the Mexican diplomatic service and the team of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) about the historical moment that the country is experiencing and the international policy plans for 2026.

In a brief statement, the Foreign Ministry reported that the Chief Executive referred to the transformation process that Mexico is going through and the objectives that will guide diplomatic action during this year.

For his part, the head of the SRE, Juan Ramón de la Fuente, presented a balance of the activities carried out during the three days of work of the REC 2026 and explained the priorities of the diplomatic representations, including the strengthening of consular protection and assistance, the international projection of national advances and the reaffirmation of a foreign policy based on constitutional principles.

Upon leaving the meeting, Mexico’s ambassador to Norway, Omar Fayad, highlighted that in the first days of the year attention has focused on international issues, in particular the situation in Venezuela, in the face of which Mexico has maintained a clear stance of respect for international law, the Constitution and the sovereignty of nations, without resorting to confrontation.

Fayad added that the president reiterated that Mexico will continue defending the autonomy of the countries and promoting the resolution of conflicts through dialogue between the people themselves, without the intervention of external powers. Regarding possible risks for Mexico derived from the Venezuelan situation, he indicated that Sheinbaum explained the complexity of the relationship with Trump, although he stressed that his position has been firm, clear and conciliatory.

In the same sense, the undersecretary for North America, Roberto Velasco, affirmed that the Mexican government will maintain its position regarding Venezuela, while continuing to build cooperation with the United States.

At the close of the REC 2026, the SRE reported that in the face of the intensification of global geopolitical tensions, Mexico will promote the integration of Latin America and the Caribbean and the construction of a common agenda focused on the well-being of its people as the axis of its foreign policy in 2026.
