Mexico must strengthen cooperation and academic exchange of its scientists and students with their peers in Latin America and Europe, but “always with ethical principles, seeking the benefit of people,” said Rosaura Ruiz Gutiérrez, Secretary of Science, Humanities, Technology and Innovation (Secihti).

In the presentation of the Strategic Areas for Strengthening the Cooperation of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac)-European Union, he highlighted that progress is being made in the integration of research groups in priority axes for the country, with which they will seek to promote networks with their peers in Europe and Latin America.

Accompanied by Signe Ratso, deputy director general of the General Directorate for Research and Innovation of the European Commission, with whom representatives of countries from both regions held a meeting, Ruiz Gutiérrez, highlighted that the aim is to publicize what the country promotes in terms of science and technology, in terms of cooperation with nations that make up Celac and the European Union.

Application of AI in all fields of science

In the Eugenio Méndez Docurro auditorium of the Secretariat of Science, Humanities, Technology and Innovation, he highlighted that among the priority issues for both regions, and that they will seek to develop as a priority, include climate change, environmental sustainability and energy transition, in addition to health issues and the application of artificial intelligence (AI) to all fields of science.

He highlighted the use of supercomputing as a topic included by Mexico as a priority, which is why Mateo Valero, director of the Barcelona Supercomputing Center, which he founded in 2005, also attended the meeting, considered one of the most relevant institutions in the world in supercomputing.

The head of Secihti, who highlighted the presence of representatives from various countries, including Switzerland, Portugal, Cuba and El Salvador, highlighted that “the idea is to promote European calls, especially to expand the participation of the Mexican scientific community.”

The above, because a priority is to “promote academic and scientific mobility, including short stays, specialized training programs and strengthening research networks in European countries,” he noted.

In addition, he stressed that it is necessary to explore “co-financing mechanisms and new collaboration modalities, including schemes that facilitate joint participation in strategic projects.”

Ruiz Gutiérrez also invited the Celac countries and the European Union to participate in the STS Forum 2025 (Science and Technology in Society Forum), which will take place from December 4 to 5 of this year, at the WTC in Xochitepec, Morelos.
