The squid that reached the coast of Pedasí, in Los Santos, are suitable for consumption, as indicated by the regional directorate of the Ministry of My Environment (MiAmbiente) of Los Santos, revealing that there is nothing to show that it is contamination in the sea.
Elida Bernal, regional director of MiAmbiente in Los Santos, indicated that “we received the alert of the stranding of squid in the Pedasí sector, in the first instance they came out in the protected area of Pablo Arturo Barrios, then we also received them in the Pocrí area, so the technicians went to the area”.
He explained that the specimens can be ingested because “there is nothing that shows us that it is due to some contamination, it is a natural process.”
He added that for this time the temperatures are lower, decreasing between 16° to 22°C. Currently on our coasts in Pedasí temperatures of 21° are reported, this causes the squid to be arriving alive on the coasts.
“So far in 2023, this is the first case of stranding of this specimen, whose phenomenon occurs on these dates due to the variation in sea temperatures.
“Due to this change, some marine species strand or go out to shallower waters in search of oxygen and thermoregulation, without returning to the sea on their own,” said technicians from the Los Santos region.
