Santo Domingo.– President Luis Abinader held a meeting this Tuesday with relief agencies, representatives of the mayor’s office and officials from various ministries, in which he reiterated the suspension of work in the public and private sectors, as well as teachingin the provinces declared in red alert by Tropical Storm Melissa.
The president stressed that the measure seeks protect the lives of citizens and minimize risks from accumulated rain that could occur with the approach of the phenomenon towards the Haitian peninsula.
According to the director of the Emergency Operations Center (COE), the provinces under red alert are San Cristóbal, Peravia, Azua, San Juan, Barahona, Pedernales and Greater Santo Domingo. Besides, thirteen provinces remain on yellow alert and three in green.
Abinader recalled that the government remains in permanent sessionmonitoring the progress of the storm, and reiterated the call to the population to maintain prudence and prioritize the safety of their families and property. “It is a very erratic storm, practically stationary, so extreme caution must be taken,” he said.
The suspension of work and classes applies from this Tuesday to 1:00 in the afternoon and will extend until tomorrow, Thursday, when the president will meet again with relief agencies and local authorities to determine whether the preventive measure is maintained or lifted.
The head of state stressed that the main purpose of these provisions is save lives and protect property in the most vulnerable areas of the country.
