The series of rains that hit the metropolitan region of São Paulo on Friday afternoon (20) left 660,000 customers of the Enel concessionaire without electricity. The company had announced a special duty yesterday, when the state Civil Defense issued a warning for bad weather across the state for this Friday and Saturday.
The city of Pirapora do Bom Jesus has around 35% of homes without electricity at around 6pm. Mauá and Itapecerica da Serra had around 27% affected, while Osasco has 20%, or around 70 thousand homes, without supply.
The capital had 425 thousand customers, out of a total of 5 and a half million, affected, in addition to record traffic records, with more than 600 km of traffic jams.
Enel reported that the rain showers accompanied by winds that hit the concession area impacted the energy supply for some customers in the East and North regions, mainly. “We activated the operation plan in advance, with additional mobilization of teams in the field who continue working to restore power as soon as possible to customers whose service was affected,” said the company.
The heavy rains caused several reports of flooding, of which 9 points remained impassable at the beginning of the night. Eight rivers, in the north and east of the capital, are reported to have overflowed, while another three are on alert.
At the Santana meteorological station, in the north of the city, winds of more than 80km/h were recorded. Civil Defense also drew attention to the impact in the regions of São Carlos and Campinas, without detailing the incidents. There have been no reports of missing or dead people so far.
The state fire department recorded 97 calls for falling trees in the metropolitan region.
Congonhas Airport reported that three flights were diverted to other airports due to bad weather, but that it continues to operate normally.
São Paulo coast
The north coast was also affected by the rains. According to the state Civil Defense, the cold front is expected to cause more impacts today. “For the next few hours, the cold front will continue to move through the State of São Paulo and cause heavy rain showers, followed by lightning and wind in the São Sebastião-SP region.”
Rainfall is expected to accumulate 65mm over the next 24 hours and with gusts reaching approximately 75km/h.
According to data from the meteorological station of the National Center for Monitoring and Alerts of Natural Disasters (Cemaden) in São Sebastião, between 12 pm and 2 pm, wind gusts of 20 km/h and accumulated rain of 18.5 mm were observed.
The city hall reported that flooding led to the closure of health units in the neighborhoods of Pontal da Cruz, Boiçucanga 1 and 2, Cambury 1 and 2, Barra do Sahy and Juquehy 1 and 2. “The city received reconstruction investments after historic rains in January 2023, when 65 people died on the north coast after strong storms”, informs the city hall.
