The storm that hit the metropolitan region of São Paulo was mainly concentrated in the south and west regions of the city, with a precipitation peak of 40 mm in the Pinheiros and Butantã regions. Energy distributor Enel confirmed that more than 130,000 customers were affected, equivalent to around 250,000 people.
The rains, with the presence of small pieces of hail, reached the Butantã region at around 1:30 pm, heading in the direction of Pinheiros. The wind exceeded 40 km/h.
At around 1:20 pm, however, a wind speed of 68 km/h was recorded at Congonhas airport. According to the region’s Civil Defense, there were 21 records of falling trees, 15 calls for flooding and 1 collapse.
Images on social media show ceiling lining falling in at least two units at the University of São Paulo (USP), in the Faculties of Economics and Administration and in the Faculty of Philosophy, Letters and Human Sciences. Agência Brasil was unable to contact USP to confirm what happened. According to Civil Defense, there are no reports of injuries.
At 5pm, Enel confirmed that 1.54% of customers in the region were still without power, after rain damaged some points on the electricity grid. In the last partial calculation, this value fell to 0.97%, still affecting just over 80 thousand customers.
