Erika Dionisio forma parte del Cuerpo de Bomberos de la capital.

The stories of these womenwhich are part of the articulated entities of the ECU 911 emergency line, are counted prior to the commemoration by the International Women’s Day (March 8).

With their stories, these women They allow us to understand the dynamics that are generated around the work of saving lives.

Life’s experiences

In Ecuador, approximately 10,000 incidents are reported to 9-1-1 each day. Part of these narratives that will be developed below include the 2016 earthquake, violent incidents, health issues, labor, road mishaps, children’s cases… among thousands that are built 24 hours a day. These calls have a common denominator: “they are cases that touch the soul and the heart; you cannot be immune to people’s pain”, according to one of the interviewees.

Gabriela Villavicencio She is an ECU 911 call evaluator and points out that “a lady told her that there were three minors who were alone in the house. The mother usually went out, left them there and they cried a lot.

– The lady stated that ‘she didn’t know what to do or how to help them’.
– I told him that the children might be hungry. That could help them with food.
– Then he put me on the phone and I heard everything! When the unit that we coordinated arrived, this shook me.” “My work is very rewarding,” adds the operator.

“After hanging up the call then we can say well, it’s over, we’re fine now,” says Villavicencio.

2016 earthquake

Erika Dionysus It is part of the Fire Department of the capital; She tells an anecdote with great pride, which will surely serve as an inspiration for girls who one day want to be firefighters.

“It was during the earthquake on April 16, 2016. A call came in from the earthquake zone because communications were linked to Quito. There were eight people trapped inside a factory; some were already unconscious and we had to keep the only citizen who was awake (he was very sleepy and exhausted) on the line so that he could deliver the information to the rescuers.”

These were desperate moments, without a doubt, due to the magnitude of the telluric emergency. “The rescuers arrived and managed to save the eight people. That day did mark us all, see in the news that those eight people were saved, it filled us with joy,” says Erika.

part of a chase

the second sergeant Daysi Endara it’s police. “Knowing that I can help, support another person fills me with pride and happiness,” she says, convinced of her vocation for service.

The anecdote that he remembers the most is something tragic and it happened several years ago. “A violent death was recorded on Av. United Nations. The one who called 9-1-1 was my partner who was chasing the perpetrator and he indicated the streets, the characteristics of the suspect who tried to flee. With the support of other police units, it was possible to intercept and apprehend the citizen.”

“Attending to these types of alerts fills you with energy and adrenaline because it seems that I was in pursuit,” Endara said.

health emergencies

Gabriela Villagran It belongs to the Ministry of Health. Part of its activities includes the care of laborwhich in his words has been “one of the best professional experiences”.

“The fact of being present at such a wonderful moment is the best. Sometimes we need to intervene immediately and we have had several cases”.

She remembers one of these alerts linked to women in a state of gestation. “A pregnant patient started convulsing. The ambulance arrived and she was transferred to a nursing home. We know that the evolution was good and that gives us great joy and encourages us to continue working”, concluded Villagrán. This time the mother and baby were saved.

First aid

Jenny Jacome He works at the Metropolitan Transit Agency (AMT) and indicates that while he was leaving his shift and waiting for the bus, he witnessed a traffic accident: a child was run over. “I carried out the procedure because as traffic agents we are prepared for the office and the territory and it was interesting to deal with this case because the child did not suffer serious injuries and the lady (who was nervous and was not to blame because the child crossed the street without seeing) was not arrested.”

These women agree on something: helping save lives is very rewarding, each emergency is different, but they always do their best to help citizens.(AVV)
